The health and safety of employees and contractors is a top priority for Philip Morris International (PMI), and we are committed to providing them with a safe and secure work environment. At PMI, our goal is to eliminate all work related injuries and illnesses.
Safety is particularly important in manufacturing locations and for workers who drive our vehicles. Each work location has safety rules that must be followed. We comply with health and safety laws, as well as our own health and safety policies, which often go beyond what the law requires.
Having safety rules is not enough, though. Our company’s commitment to safety means each of us needs to be alert to safety risks as we go about our jobs. All employees and anyone else working on our premises must know the health and safety requirements associated with their work, and we train and support behavioral safety programs accordingly.
In our manufacturing facilities, we achieved a further reduction in our Lost Time Injury (LTI) rate in 2011 to an all-time low of 0.17*. Reaching zero LTIs is a challenging goal for all of us, but a number of our factories have demonstrated that it is possible.
In 2011, 26 of our manufacturing facilities were LTI free and five of those have achieved over 10 million hours worked without LTI. Achievement of our safety goals is supported by ongoing initiatives which embody such measures as:
- job safety and behavioral analyses;
- employee training courses;
- routine and planned inspections conducted by the management team and supervisors;
- reinforcing our safety commitments across the whole organization, including our sales force through our Fleet Safety Program; and
- taking our commitment beyond our employees to cover contractors and other third parties.
