Programme Leader - Social Sustainability

Since 2011, the scope of “Sustainable Agriculture” greatly evolved from a focus primarily to grow the crop to a total sustainability approach driven by PMI’s Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) program. GAP, which sets PMI expectations of Agricultural Programs across the company’s tobacco leaf sourcing footprint, has three pillars - Crop, Environment and Social. The new version of GAP set Governance as the foundation of these three pillars by incorporating the management processes to successfully implement GAP and also reflects the societal expectations towards tobacco growing. Your ‘day to day’ Contribute to the development and execution of global Sustainable Agriculture strategies with a special focus on Social Sustainability to further improve agricultural practices and drive sustainable tobacco production. Support Central function and Regional offices/Markets in the implementation of the Social Sustainability initiatives and liaise with PMI Leaf suppliers and various internal and external partners to ensure the availability of tobacco meeting PMI sustainability requirements. These strategies and programs are developed and coordinated in a complex global environment involving multiple affiliates, suppliers, markets and external partners which together bear significant potential business risks and reputation exposure. •Contribute to the development of the Global Social Sustainability strategy and support its implementation in the regions and markets for conventional and reduced-risk products. Develop and deploy indicators and monitoring processes to demonstrate the impact and progress towards objectives and goals for internal and external communications. •Support the markets in the development of effective approaches and targeted initiatives to address key priority areas within our Agricultural Labor Practices code, including: Child labor and other labor abuses; Safe working environment (farm workers’ accommodation & Personal Protective Equipment); and Income and labor hours (workers paid at least the minimum wage). •Liaise with the PMI Leaf Regions and direct PMI Leaf Supplier and Affiliates agricultural efforts to ensure key initiatives are identified and implemented in line with global strategy on sustainable tobacco production. Promote best practices sharing and implementation. •Collaborate in the design and management of projects to evaluate new technologies, practices or opportunities to further enhance labor practices, reduce labor requirements and therefore lower cost of production, and increase farm income levels. Develop deployment scenarios. •Engage with key internal and external partners to ensure that an awareness of the various social programs exist and program objectives are understood and agreed by the partners. •Support PMI Leaf Suppliers in benchmarking and identifying areas for improvement of social parameters. •Monitor the implementation of Sustainable Tobacco Production (STP) initiatives related to Social Sustainability in the regions and markets we source tobacco from. Who we’re looking for •College/University degree in Agricultural Production, Agronomy Engineer/Science, or other related degree with a desired specialization in Social Sciences •Good knowledge in Agricultural economics, Social science and human behavior •Minimum 5 years of practical experience in Agriculture Supply Chains related to Social Sustainability Programs •Proven records working with cross-functional programs, in multi-national and multi-cultural environment. •Fluency in English What we offer Our success depends on the men and women who come to work every single day with a sense of purpose and an appetite for progress.
