Your ‘day to day’: As Senior Engineer Reliability you will be part of our Reliability Testing Team and will be reporting to the Manager Methods. The position will be based in Philip Morris Manufacturing & Technology Bologna S.p.A. and will have a direct reporting line to our central functions in Switzerland. In your role, you will be responsible to plan and execute Reliability activities on New Products through the application of scientific, engineering and reliability skills and knowledge with special emphasis on product reliability. Your main role will be divided into 6 different areas / Key Accountabilities: Reliability analysis and modelling: • Develop test protocols and methodologies to ensure robustness, durability and reliability of products with a main focus on system level • Develop reliability test plans, including climate environment, mechanical stresses, cycling tests, Accelerated Lifetime Tests (ALT) and Highly Accelerated Life Test and Highly Accelerated Stress Screen (HALT/HASS) to quantify reliability and/or to explore design margins • Conduct test data analysis with statistical life data analysis techniques, clearly communicate test results, and collaborate with design and reliability engineers to resolve issues detected in testing • Analyse and provide reliability insights from prototype testing results and early signals by combining multi-dimensional data sources • Work closely with Design and data engineers to create/interpret/validate numeric models of fielded and in-test products. • Assess opportunities to use quantitative Accelerated Lifetime Tests (ALT) at system, sub-system and component level and drive projects to shorten tests time Design for reliability: • Identify critical functions and key reliability risks at each phase of the reliability program in the development process and work with cross functional teams to integrate DFR methodologies to early derisk • Partner with simulation and design teams to assess problems areas before physical samples are available for testing • Direct and manage third-party testing programs (HALT and other) • Provide reliability design guidelines and apply reliability lessons learned to enable continuous improvement. Risk Assessment and probabilistic simulations: • Perform qualitative and quantitative design risk assessment (design FMEA, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Event Tree analysis) of the product in collaboration with cross-functional team. • Define and use probabilistic models (PRA, MCMC, stress-strength, etc.) on complex systems for critical design reliability decision-making Defect Management: • Act as subject matter experts in a timely manner to address any deficiencies or defects found during testing. • Participate in the defect tracking system meetings and ensure defects arising from reliability studies are investigated and root cause identified. • Liaise with operation team and external partners to ensure reliability CAPAs or improvement actions are implemented in timely manner. • May develop and recommend technical alternatives and design improvements. • Participate as SME in the creation of the fault tree for new products ensuring a smooth handover to quality and markets. Usage and environmental conditions: • Answer complex questions on device usage and behaviour to proactively grow reliability and minimize field failures • Establish usage data collection objectives and strategy, and work with cross functional teams to develop data collection and reporting systems • Analyse usage and environmental conditions from the field in order to improve requirement setting and testing methods Quality Management System (QMS): • Create/maintain Procedures (SOP) related to his/her functional area. • Assist in best practices (BEP) creation/maintenance. Essential Skills and competencies: • Master or Bachelor in Electrical / Mechanical / Material Science Engineering, Micro-engineering or Physics (proven track record in reliability testing) • Minimum 6-10 years’ experience in product Reliability engineering and/or Quality Engineering or related field. • Experience in mechanical, electrical, material, chemical and climatic reliability testing of consumer electronics devices (shock/drop/vibration tests, environmental Test, ...) • Experience in consumer product failure analysis (root cause analysis) and defect management of embedded electronic systems ideally using a liquid/solid/gaseous consumable. • Strong experience in statistical life data analysis and Design for Reliability (DFR) methodologies • Experience planning, implementing, executing and analysing Accelerated Life Tests (+ icing on the cake HALT and ORT tests). • Familiarity, or interest, for general programming in scripting languages for data analysis / processing (Python preferred) and Database understanding • Knowledge of industry test standards such as UL, IEC, and ISO... • Experience working with local and international suppliers for delivery on quality and time Displaying the following traits would be an advantage: • Analytical and inquisitive mindset. • Ability to creatively apply knowledge of reliability engineering concepts, principles, and theories where few/no precedents exist • Ability to operate under own initiative and willingness to try something new. • Ability to tailor technical message to various audience • Well-developed interpersonal and communications skills essential for working in multi-functional teams. • Fluency in spoken and written English is a must.
