On April 16, 2016, Ecuador was hit by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. The devastation included 600 casualties, 3,000 inured, and thousands missing. Strong aftershocks caused further damage, complicating recovery. Damages were estimated at USD 3 billion.
PMI responded to the call for support from Ecuador and the United Nations. We pledged USD 500,000 in disaster relief to assist with rescue and rebuilding efforts.
In addition to PMI’s global contribution, several of our local affiliates also launched fundraising initiatives.
Helping Drought Victims in Ethiopia
In the wake of the extreme drought affecting East Africa, 10.2 million people in Ethiopia have been in need of emergency food assistance.
In response, we donated USD 500,000 in relief funds to the Ethiopian Red Cross.
The grant is being used to feed children, breastfeeding mothers, and pregnant women, as well as to improve hygiene and sanitation.
In response to PMI’s donation, the Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister recognized our company for being the first multinational to step forward and contribute.
We promote access to education and educational opportunities for the underprivileged with a focus on tobacco farmers and their families.
We support programs that promote employment and income-generating activities for socially vulnerable individuals and communities.
