Tabacalera Costarricense S.A. has had a long history in the country. It was established in the 1930s, when Mario Bengoechea and Manuel De Mendiola founded the first cigarette factory in Costa Rica.
By 1965, the company stood out for their high quality standards and technological innovations, its support of tobacco farming, and its efforts to meet the expectations of adult consumers by being the first company to introduce and use filters in Costa Rica.

In 1975, PMI acquired an interest in Tabacalera Costarricense S.A. PMI began to establish itself as an important company dedicated to the production and sale of cigarettes, through Tabacalera Costarricense S.A. and Mendiola & Compañía S.A.
