PMI Statement: Collaboration with the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR) reaches conclusion

We thank the Danish Institute for Human Rights for the collaboration that has now reached its conclusion.

The Institute’s expertise has helped PMI develop a better understanding of our group-level risks and gaps, which we will use to continue to identify and address our actual and potential human rights impacts, in accordance with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

The risk assessment and gap analysis includes DIHR’s views on how PMI and our products impact human rights, including the right to health. DIHR recommends PMI to develop a roadmap outlining how to avoid and address the different adverse human rights impacts that it sees. DIHR also recommends PMI to consider exiting from the manufacture and sale of cigarettes altogether should PMI be unable to cease and prevent its negative impacts. The immediate cessation of cigarette sales was not among its recommendations.

While we may disagree with some of DIHR’s observations, we are currently developing an action plan following DIHR’s recommendations. We will report on our action plan before the end of the year.
