We have set high standards for ourselves, and have put in place a rigorous scientific assessment program for our smoke-free products.
Studies on our IQOS heated tobacco products are progressing rapidly, and the results are encouraging.
Our portfolio currently consists of four smoke-free products. PMI's smoke-free products are now available in 70 markets.
Our most advanced smoke-free product is the IQOS tobacco heating system, which releases nicotine and flavors without combustion. Because the tobacco is heated and not burned, the average levels of harmful chemicals are significantly reduced compared to cigarette smoke*. This is also true for our second heated tobacco product in development, TEEPS.
Our products without tobacco produce a nicotine-containing vapor. IQOS VEEV is our e-vapor product, with a heating technology that represents a new approach to vapor generation. Our other product without tobacco that is currently under development is STEEM, which generates a flavorful nicotine-containing vapor in the form of a nicotine salt.
*Importantly, none of our smoke-free products are risk-free and they deliver nicotine, which is addictive. The best choice is always to quit tobacco and nicotine altogether. However, for those adults who do not quit, switching to a smoke-free alternative represents a better choice than continuing to smoke.
IQOS is PMI’s brand of smoke-free products, including tobacco heating systems and e-vapor products.
IQOS tobacco heating systems heat specially designed heated tobacco units, without combustion, fire, ash, or smoke. This generates a flavorful nicotine-containing vapor, releasing the true taste of heated tobacco. The experience lasts about six minutes or 14 puffs, comparable to that of a cigarette.
Since there is no burning, the levels of harmful chemicals are significantly reduced compared to cigarette smoke. Our studies on IQOS heated tobacco products are progressing rapidly and indicate that it has the potential to present less risk of harm compared to continued smoking for adult smokers who switch to it completely instead of continuing to smoke. However, IQOS products are not risk-free and deliver nicotine, which is addictive.
There is no global standard on where consumers can enjoy smoke-free products such as IQOS heated tobacco products or IQOS VEEV e-vapor products.
Check your local regulations about this emerging category of products. Public premises may also have their own rules on using or prohibiting use of smoke-free products. If the use of IQOS products use indoors is not prohibited either by law or by the premises operator, consumers should exercise commonsense with respect to where and around whom they use such devices
IQOS is not and never was an acronym. It is Philip Morris International’s brand name for its portfolio of heated tobacco and e-vapor products. The name was created to denote innovation and game-changing technology coupled with advanced science, and a name that we could protect and use in many markets.
Although many third parties have falsely attributed acronyms to what “IQOS” means, none of these ideas are correct.
IQOS ILUMA is our latest generation of heated tobacco product (HTP) and a new addition to our smoke-free products portfolio.
Launched in 2021, it combines innovative technology that works with PMI’s SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEMTM that heats the tobacco from within. This technology is different from our original IQOS blade HTP devices (e.g., IQOS, IQOS 2.4, IQOS 2.4+, IQOS 3, IQOS 3 Duo, and IQOS 3 Multi). However, both blade and induction devices generate nicotine-containing vapor, releasing the taste of tobacco without combustion, and therefore without burning or emitting smoke.
The IQOS ILUMA holder can only be used with specially designed tobacco units called TEREA SMARTCORE STICKSTM.
HEETS or HEATSTICKS units can only be used with the original IQOS blade heated tobacco holders and cannot be used with IQOS ILUMA.
This technology requires additional information for consumers that is provided on our IQOS website and in our product warnings.
HEETS, also known as HeatSticks in some markets, is a specially designed heated tobacco unit that contains tobacco and is intended for exclusive use with the earlier versions of the IQOS heated tobacco holder that uses “blade” technology (IQOS, IQOS 2.4, IQOS 2.4+, IQOS 3, IQOS 3 Duo, and IQOS 3 Multi).
They are made up of elements that include a tobacco plug, hollow acetate tube, polymer-film filter, cellulose-acetate mouthpiece filter, and outer and mouth-end papers.
The consumer inserts a HEETS into the IQOS blade holder, where it is heated without combustion. The consumer can then draw on it to enjoy the taste of heated tobacco. HEETS contain nicotine which is addictive and not risk-free.
HEETS are not compatible with the new induction heated tobacco product, IQOS ILUMA, which has its own specially designed tobacco units called TEREA SMARTCORE STICKS™.
IQOS VEEV is our next-generation e-vapor product that uses a new approach to vapor generation. Unlike IQOS heated tobacco products, IQOS VEEV uses IQOS VEEV MESH heating technology—a metallic mesh with tiny holes to heat e-liquid in a pre-filled, pre-sealed pod (called VEEV). Along with pharmaceutical-grade nicotine, VEEV e-liquids also contain food-grade flavorings.
VEEV pods are manufactured, assembled, pre-filled, and pre-sealed in our European production facilities. IQOS VEEV also features puff-activated heating and a low-liquid-level detection system that ensures the consistency and quality of the vapor generated and inhaled.
TEEPS is one of our heated tobacco products. It is carbon-heated and has a look and feel comparable to a cigarette, but it is not a cigarette.
The carbon heat source at the end of TEEPS, using patented HeatControl Technology, is ignited, which transfers heat to a uniquely processed tobacco plug.
The consumer puffs on TEEPS to inhale a flavorful nicotine-containing vapor until the end of the experience. The patented design of TEEPS prevents tobacco from burning.
Reduced-Risk Products (“RRPs”) is the term PMI uses to refer to products that present, are likely to present, or have the potential to present less risk of harm to smokers who switch to these products versus continued smoking.
PMI has a range of RRPs in various stages of development, scientific assessment, and commercialization. Because our RRPs do not burn tobacco, they produce far lower quantities of harmful and potentially harmful compounds than those found in cigarette smoke.
E-cigarettes, also called electronic cigarettes, are a popular smoke-free category of products without tobacco.
These battery-powered devices vaporize a liquid solution, also known as an e-liquid, containing nicotine and/or flavors.
One of the problems typically associated with e-cigarettes is the lack of quality control and automation throughout the manufacturing process. Unlike typical e-cigarette cartridges, our IQOS VEEV pods are manufactured, assembled, pre-filled, and pre-sealed in a fully automated process in our European production facilities.
Vaping is the term typically used to describe inhaling an aerosol (vapor) from an e-cigarette.
Vaping typically describes the use of a smoke-free product that forms a vapor that is inhaled by a consumer. Examples of such products are e-cigarettes.
We have found several ways to produce a flavorful nicotine-containing vapor that a consumer can inhale, but that have significantly lower levels of harmful chemicals than cigarettes. These products contain nicotine, which is addictive, and are not risk free.
The difference between vaping and smoking lies in the characteristics of the aerosol that's inhaled.
When smoking a cigarette, the consumer inhales the smoke that’s produced through the process of burning tobacco.
The term vaping, however, describes the use of a smoke-free product (e.g. e-cigarettes) that forms a vapor that is inhaled by a consumer.
PMI’s scientists have developed several ways to produce a flavorful nicotine-containing vapor without burning that a consumer can inhale. This produces significantly lower levels of harmful chemicals than cigarettes. However, these products provide nicotine, which is addictive, and these products are not risk-free.
