PMI included in the 2022 Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index for its commitment to advancing women’s equity26 Jan 2022 · 5 min read
PMI has been named in the Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index (GEI) for a second consecutive year.
Our inclusion in the 2022 list is recognition of the significant progress we’re making to advance gender equality globally at our company.
The business case for gender equality is clear: Companies in which woman hold more management roles, generate higher cash flow returns on investment according to research by Credit Suisse.
For PMI, this is an even bigger achievement than last year because the threshold for inclusion in the 2022 GEI—based on disclosure and data performance—has grown.
“Proud of our progress”
The 2022 GEI showcases PMI’s transparency in gender reporting, which demonstrates our efforts to drive gender equity in the workplace and equal opportunities for all employees.
Currently, 39.2 percent of management positions at PMI are held by women.
This marks an increase of over 10 percent since 2014 and brings us closer to our company-wide target of at least 40 percent female representation in management by the end of 2022.
The GEI is a modified market capitalization-weighted index that aims to track the performance of public companies committed to transparency in gender-data reporting.
It measures gender equality across five pillars: female leadership & talent pipeline, equal pay & gender pay parity, inclusive culture, anti-sexual harassment policies, and pro-women brand.
All of the companies listed on the GEI scored at or above a global threshold established by Bloomberg to reflect disclosure and the achievement or adoption of best-in-class statistics and policies.
Peter T. Grauer, Chairman of Bloomberg and Founding Chairman of the U.S. 30% Club, said: “We are proud to recognize PMI and the other 417 companies included in the 2022 GEI for their commitment to transparency and setting a new standard in gender-related data reporting.
“Even though the threshold for inclusion in the GEI has risen, the member list continues to grow. This is a testament that more companies are working to improve upon their gender-related metrics, fostering more opportunity for diverse talent to succeed in their organizations.”
Advancing gender equality
Our second consecutive inclusion in the GEI follows a series of achievements and initiatives to further gender equality at PMI.
- Becoming the first EQUAL-SALARY globally certified company in March 2019, confirming equal pay for equal work for women and men in the 90-plus countries PMI operates.
- Addressing gender bias in talent assessments—including in recruitment, performance management, and opportunities for promotion.
- Introduction of global inclusive parental leave guidelines in 2020.
- Celebrating top female talent as role models and offering formal and informal opportunities for women to build valuable connections for support, learning, and mentoring.
- Launching a program to support women in leadership positions.
Equality key to our smoke-free ambitions
Achieving gender balance across PMI isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s critical to the long-term success of our business.
That’s why it’s imperative we continue to cultivate an inclusive culture and workplace reflective of the world’s diversity.
This will enable and empower us to drive the innovation and consumer-centricity needed to bring our vision of a smoke-free future to fruition.
