As the Lead, Media Relations & Issues Management you will be responsible for creating, executing and maintaining media relations initiatives, assisting in safeguarding the company’s corporate reputation and promoting its interests in a deadline driven environment. You will build and nurture high-functioning relationship with members of the press at national and local level in key markets, across platforms. As a collaborator you will work with senior managers and executives to develop strategies and tactics to meet the public affairs goals, established by the External Affairs team. Your ‘day to day’ • Primary point of contact for the media. Manage incoming media requests, proactively engage media, and manage daily media monitoring and analysis activities. • Work to identify opportunities to advance the company’s strategy to build a “Smoke Free Canada” by 2035; developing news stories focusing on sustainability, innovation, science, harm reduction and government regulations. • Respond in a timely manner to media requests about RBH operations and activities; • Support key message development and their adaptation for media products such as press release, op-ed, briefing documents, Q&A’s, media pitches and other written materials; • Support in preparing executives for media engagements and speaking events (e.g. briefings, speaking notes, key message refresh) • Pitch media opportunities for RBH executives including op-eds, speaking engagements, and industry events; • Network proactively with media industry to build authentic, constructive and trusting relationships with members of Canadian press at national and local level in key markets, across platforms (print, magazine, digital, TV, radio); • Collaborate closely with External Affairs teammates to support cross-function campaigns to promote RBH and broaden awareness with key stakeholders; • Identify risks and mitigate potential obstacles to successful project outcomes; • Support the Manager of Media Relations & Issues Management on issues related activities with input from other External Affairs staff and key RBH departments; • Work with cross-function team on multiple projects; • Manage external agency partners and contractors; • Help maintain a reporter database, contact list and relationships; • Manage External Affairs calendar; • Oversee traditional and digital news media monitoring and recommend new approaches for analysis; and • Serve as back-up to the Manager, Media Relations & Issues Management. Who we’re looking for • Bilingualism (English/French) preferred in both official languages, both written and oral; • Minimum 8 years working in media or public relations; newsroom experience is an asset, corporate issues management, particularly in an intensive, challenging industry or company preferred; • Minimum 2 years’ experience in agency management; • Demonstrated results in leading ongoing media relations campaigns, including proven ability to secure media coverage broadly in mainstream Canadian press and improve reach, share of voice and sentiment over time; • Established media contacts in Canadian press and ability to expand network; • Extensive experience and practical knowledge of traditional and emerging digital Canadian media; • General understanding of Canadian political system and current political dynamics; • Experience in managing business critical issues, crisis management and reputation protection; • Undergraduate degree in a related area such as communications, journalism or political science; • Proficiency in writing/editing Canadian Press (CP) style and in plain language; • Collaborative style, thoughtful judgment, team-oriented; • Deadline driven; ability to work in a fast-paced, changing business environment; • Experience speaking and writing about complex, difficult often hostile issues; and • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and related computer programs.
