THE ROLE We are looking for a motivated, positive minded, and results-driven corporate counsel to join our Law team in Tokyo. As part of the small but dynamic legal team you will take a prominent role in working cross-functionally as well as with regional and global colleagues in the Law Department. You will advise on all legal aspects relating to the successful commercialization of our smoke-free products such as applicable consumer laws, competition law, data protection compliance, and labor law issues. The work includes legal reviews of commercial materials, contract drafting, conducting trainings, and preparing risk assessments as well as guiding other functions to ensure compliance with PMI’s policies and practices, including the collaboration with our global Operations Center in Switzerland. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES ? Provide timely and best-in-class legal advice on a wide variety of commercial activities in a fast-paced environment, in line with applicable legal requirements (occasionally including unsettled areas of laws), company policies, and commercial objectives through both internal and external resources. ? Participate in cross-functional project teams to identify legally and policy compliant solutions to commercial initiatives; lead Law Department-driven projects. ? Contribute to building the Law Department capabilities by actively sharing issues of common interest, including critical legal questions, legal developments, and best practices in advising colleagues and optimizing workflows. ? Ensure best-in-class legal services by managing outside counsel effectively and efficiently. ? Contribute to the Law Team’s objectives such as by implementing departmental plans, providing expert advice in line with the team’s work allocation plan, and reviewing commercial and corporate initiatives. ? Lead Law-driven training initiatives; prepare and provide trainings on legal and policy matters to PMJ colleagues. QUALIFICATIONS ? College/University degree ? Qualified to practice Law in Japan (bengoshi) or bar admission in another jurisdiction ? 5 (minimum) to 10 years of relevant practice (e.g., corporate and commercial law, competition law, data protection law, employment law) ? Experience in private practice and multinational corporation is preferred ? Excellent written and verbal communication skills, both in Japanese and English ? Enthusiastic and motivated self-starter with a strong drive for results ? Team player, curious and positive mindset; sense of humor ? Fast learner with solid understanding of the laws of Japan ? Consumer centric, flexible, pragmatic, and comfortable dealing with ambiguity ? Passion for collaboration and relationships characterized by credibility, respect, and trust. ?
